Friendships are hurting right now. It’s what so many people are talking about on social media, and even though it seems daunting, the good news is that there are ways we can nurture our friendships to ensure our relationships can navigate hardships, change, and difficult circumstances.

In this episode of Mindful With Minaa, I’m sharing tips on how to grow together in a friendship. If you walk into a book store, you will find many resources on how to sustain a romantic relationship, but not the same for friendships. This lack of educational resources also explains why friendships are hurting.

Sustaining a friendship involves several core elements:

  1. Communication: Open and honest communication is crucial. Regularly check in with each other, share thoughts and feelings, and discuss any conflicts or misunderstandings.

  2. Trust: Building and maintaining trust is fundamental. Friends should feel safe confiding in one another and should respect each other's boundaries and privacy.

  3. Support: Being there for one another during difficult times fosters a strong bond. Celebrate each other’s successes and offer help during challenges.

  4. Respect: Understand and respect differences in opinions, lifestyles, and decisions. This creates a healthy environment where both friends feel valued.

  5. Time: Invest time in the friendship. Prioritize quality time together, whether through in-person visits, phone calls, or virtual hangouts.

  6. Flexibility: Life can be unpredictable. Be willing to adapt and accommodate changes in each other’s lives, schedules, and needs.

  7. Shared Interests: Engage in activities that both friends enjoy. This can strengthen the connection and create lasting memories.

  8. Forgiveness: Accept that mistakes will happen. Being willing to forgive and move past grievances is essential for long-term friendship sustainability.

Each of these elements contributes to a lasting and fulfilling friendship, allowing both individuals to grow together while supporting one another.
